【Abstract】
The edited volume Passing, Posing, Persuasion: Cultural Production and Coloniality in Japan’s East Asian Empire was published by University of Hawai‘i Press in November 2023. This volume, edited by Christina Yi, Andre Haag, and Catherine Ryu, contains an assortment of significant recent contributions to English-language studies on Japan. These studies utilize approaches based on theories of imperialism and modern colonialism to reconsider the Japanese imperial period, highlighting the variety of personal experiences and the complexity of cultural production during this time. This workshop will serve as an opportunity to discuss the aims and results of Passing, Posing, Persuasion and other aspects of ongoing contemporary Japanese studies research with two of the volume’s editors.
