Abstract:
One of the best ways to convey an idea is to have it published. This publication can refer to a book, a magazine, a newspaper, or an online publication which has become a handy contemporary resource. However, it is easy to forget the importance of print and print culture when we are thinking of research fields such as literature.
This presentation addresses issues that I brought up in my doctoral dissertation and where this research has the potential to progress. Although my dissertation did not only focus on print culture in modern Japanese literature, the physical copies of books and how they convey the image of a work of literature or that of the author is the main focus of my research. In my research I discuss paratext and intertextuality in the case of Dazai Osamu, the focus of my research, and how there are many connections to these in modern Japanese print culture. This presentation will summarize what I discovered in my research as a graduate student and the issues I will be addressing in my forthcoming research: the continuation of print culture research, author/work image and advertising, and other media directly connected to print culture (i.e., film/manga/anime adaptations) in the framework of global Japanese studies.
