【Summary】
This workshop will discuss preliminary reports on drafts of the early Japanese–Portuguese dictionary Vocabulario da Lingoa de Japam, produced in Nagasaki between 1603 and 1604. These documents, previously unknown, reveal significant details of the dictionary’s editing process. They also include early examples of Japanese print type in kanji and kana. The documents merit thorough study as important new sources on the history of Christianity in Japan.
